Navigating Holidays and Special Events on a Low-Carb Diet
Between Easter, Christmas, birthdays, school holidays and all the events and celebrations we celebrate each year, it can be tricky to maintain your low-carb diet with loads of delicious, but often unhealthy food around. While it’s great to allow yourself a cheat meal on a regular basis, there are those months that seem to have endless celebrations and gatherings centered around food and drink, and diets often go out the window. We share some top tips on navigating holidays and events while following a low-carb diet.
Know what triggers you
Nobody knows you better than you. You’ll know the situations you find most difficult to manager, and this will help you to plan ahead as much as possible. If you know that when you are around others who are drinking, you will feel inclined to drink too, which might then make you more likely to eat off plan, then these are situations you want to try and avoid. Being around family and friends often triggers excess eating and drinking, but you don’t want to miss out on events and celebrations due to your diet all the time. You are allowed to decline sometimes though, and if you want to you can also suggest having the event at your house where you are more in control of the food and drink.
Prepare your response to any diet questions in advance
If you have a certain food pusher in your friend or family group, or the topic of your diet comes up in conversations, it’s always best to have a response ready in advance, so that you don’t get caught off guard. When you are putting your response together, remember that you are your own person, and you know your body better than anyone. You don’t need anybody’s validation or permission about your food choices, and you have made a choice to eat healthy or lose weight for yourself.
Perhaps one of the most common tips, but also the most effective. Planning ahead helps to make facing the challenges that arise much easier. If you feel yourself craving those holiday foods or wanting to stray from your diet, try going for a nice walk or meditating. This will help you put this back into perspective. If you are following a low-carb diet you are also likely to have all the insight and some delicious recipes that you can share! Take the opportunity to show off your tasty low-carb dishes and snacks to friends and family. Who knows, you might convert a few people!
